Vernis A. Cordell, 78, a resident of Cottonwood, Arizona, died August 28. He was born in Westport, Minn.

Vern grew up in Sauk Centre. Following graduation in 1943, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was ischarged in 1946, he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving a Masters Degree in music. He was the band director in Riverton, Wyoming and El Paso, Texas for several years, and then moved to Arizona. He settled in Eloy, where he owned Valley Music and Appliance. In 1952, he moved to Casa Grande and was in the mobile home and real estate businesses, with offices in Tempe, Mesa and Scottsdale.

Vern had an extremely outgoing personality, made friends easily and was a very successful businessman. He was an accomplished musician, an avid reader, and loved tennis, college basketball, and spending time with his great-grandchildren.

He retired in 1977 and with his wife Helen moved to Florida, where they lived for 22 years before returning to Arizona in 1999.

Vern is survived by his wife of 40 years, Helen two daughters Robin Sims and Nancy Setne; granddaughter Shannon Lowe; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carol Meyer, Shirley Pierson and Janet Mealer; brothers Jim and Don; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at the Veterans National Cemetery in Cave Creek, Ariz. on November 7 at 11:00 a.m.

Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood is assisting the family with arrangements.
