William Douglas Hobbs

William D. Hobbs, age 87, of Chino Valley, Ariz. passed away with family present at the VA Elder Care Unit in Prescott on Dec. 10, 2008.

William was born in Columbia, Tenn., May 5 1921.

He joined the U.S. Calvary in 1936 and after it disbanded he entered the U.S. Navy in 1938. He was serving on the U.S.S. Grebe at Pearl Harbor during the attack on Dec. 7, 1941. William then stayed in the Navy serving in the Pacific during many engagements.

On Nov. 26, 1942, he married Marianna Sweeney in Frankfurt, Ky. and they cherished all 66 years they had together.

William changed to the U.S. Army in March 1950, and retired Sept. 30, 1959 as a Sgt. 1st Class. He then worked for the U.S. Government as an Operating Engineer for another 11 years at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz.

William and Marianna moved to Chino Valley in 2002 to be closer to their family.

William's hobbies included hunting, fishing and any "fix-it" projects he could get involved in. William was also a Shriner and assisted with many of their charities.

William is survived by his loving wife Marianna; son Bill and his wife Brenda; grandchildren, Stacy and Ryan (Melissa) Hobbs. He also treasured his four great-grandchildren, Meagan, Baylee, Brendan and Garrett; and his dog, Gebo.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2008 at the Chapel on the Prescott V.A. grounds, with Chaplain Murray Hardey presiding. The American Legion Color Guard will present honors at the V.A. Cemetery following the service.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Shiners of North America Crippled Children's Foundation, 240 S. Tucson Blvd., Tucson, Ariz., 85716.

The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
