Roberto A. Orrantia

Roberto A. Orrantia passed away on March 18, 2008. He was born on September 27, 1926 in Clarkdale, Arizona to Juan and Gonzala Orrantia.

His sisters Dora Sierra and Bertha Chavarria preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years Alicia A. Orrantia, daughters Martha Bohnaker and her husband Joe Bohnaker, Alicia C. Orrantia and son Roberto A. Orrantia Jr. Roberto loved and lived for his granddaughters Amber Bohnaker and Ashley Bohnaker. He loved his niece Irma Veloz, like a daughter and her son Sam Rivera, like a grandson. His sister Rosa Maria Calatayud and brothers Fernando Orrantia and Ricardo Orrantia also survive him.

Roberto was raised in Clarkdale, Arizona, Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and San Diego, California.

His passion for horses and horse riding was ignited while living in Juarez. There he passed many days riding his horse Moro.

He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served his country with honor and pride during World War II. Roberto was assigned to the Armed Guard and rose to the rank of Gunners Mate Third Class while serving on the S.S. Mission San Gabriel and the U.S.S. Begor. He was awarded the Victory Ribbon for the American Area, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with One Star, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon with One Star and the European African Middle Eastern Area Ribbon. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, Roberto moved to El Paso, Texas.

He then pursued his second passion baseball. He joined up once again with his childhood friends from Juarez to play baseball in Juarez. He continued to play until his was fifty years old. Roberto once again served his country as a civil servant at the Artillery and Air Defense Center at Ft. Bliss, Texas. He was an electronics technician with the expertise on the Nike and Hawk Missile Systems. The U.S. Government assigned him to assist the personnel from the German Air Force that were stationed at the Air Defense Center at Ft. Bliss, TX. Roberto retired in 1984.

He spent his retirement years reading, tending to his yard, gardening and spending time with his family. Roberto lived his life with honor and dignity. All who knew him and all who loved him will miss him.

Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at Martin Funeral Home Central with vigil at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral Mass will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Interment will follow to Ft. Bliss National Cemetery.
