Dorothy E. (Fain) Benatz

Dorothy Fain Benatz of Clarkdale died Oct. 4, 2005, she was 88. She was born August 1, 1917 in Shepherd, Texas to J.C. and Hazel Connell Fain.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 54 years, George, her sisters Elsie "Petie" Moore and Eloise Turner, her brother J.C. "Bus" Fain.

She is survived by her daughter, Janice Benatz of Clarkdale, her son George (Dianna) Benatz of Phoenix, and grandchildren Jason (Sunny) Benatz of Clarkdale, Denise (Greg) Buckley of California, and Albert Rutkowski of Cottonwood, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She came to McNary, Arizona in 1926 with her family in a Model T, later the family moved to Williams, Arizona.

She graduated from Arizona State Teachers College in Flagstaff with a BA in English in 1938 to work at the Clarkdale High School as secretary to Superintendent G. B. Jones. She was employed at the high school which later became Mingus High School until 1959. She then went to work for the Town of Clarkdale for 17 years, the last ten years as Town Clerk. She retired in 1976. She served two terms as Mayor of Clarkdale, from 1980 to 1986.

She was a past member of the Clarkdale Business and Professional Women's Club, the Soroptimist International of the Verde Valley, P.E.O., Chapter I, the Clark Memorial Clubhouse Restoration Committee and the Verde Valley Country Club Board of Directors.

Services will be held Monday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m. at Westcott Funeral Home in Cottonwood, burial to follow at Valley View Cemetery in Clarkdale.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Organ Fund or Verde Valley Humane Society.
