Following his air force service, he obtained a formal education in electronics from the University of Michigan and Stanford University, ultimately obtaining an Engineer's degree and election to the Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Xi honor societies.

He spent his career as a hardware and software engineer, project manager, and systems engineer at ESL incorporated in Sunnyvale, California, working on a total of 28 defense projects over 25 years. He retired with his wife Jane to Sedona, Arizona, in 1991, where he taught Algebra and Computers at Yavapai College, in Clarkdale, Arizona. In 1998, Darrell and Jane moved to Austin, Texas.
