John David Rockhill II was born in Tombstone, Ariz., on August 9, 1918. He graduated from Tombstone High School.

He was married to Marie Lucille Roper for 27 years, and they had eight children.

Charles D. Rockhill, Tammy M. Rockhill, Riley D. Rockhill, and Shirley L. Donahue all reside in Congress; John D. Rockhill III lives in Tempe; Roxanne Rockhill lives in Prescott Valley, and Mabel Marie Rockhill lives in Mesa. His brother George W. Rockhill lives in San Diego, Calif.

Our dad was a veteran of World War II, serving in Guam in the Army Air Corps as a Staff Sergeant. He worked most of his life as a core driller and retired from E.J. Longyear Drilling Co. in 1981.

Dad loved to fly small aircraft and work as a cowboy. He did both for as long as his health permitted.

He leaves 13 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Dad was preceded in death by his daughter Rochelle, grandson Eric and two brothers Charles and Wilmer Rockhill.

Dad went to sleep in death on March 3. We send grateful thanks to the Prescott Fort Whipple Veterans Hospital, Rehab/Extended Care Unit, and Hospice Wing for their excellent care and kindness.

A “memorial potluck” for John “Pops” Rockhill will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (March 24) at the Congress Community Center (the Old School House). Dad did love to visit and eat.
