Joseph Black Jr., age 78, died May 17, 2002 he was born on February 8, 1924 in Plainfield, New Jersey. Memorial Service was held Saturday, 5/25/2002, Historic First Presbyterian Church, 402 W. Monroe, Phoenix.

BLACK, Joseph

Joseph Black, Jr., age 78, of Phoenix AZ, passed away on May 17, 2002, born on February 8, 1924 in Plainfield, New Jersey. He began his professional baseball career in the Negro League with the Baltimore Elite Giants.

In 1952 he made baseball history when, as a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers, be became the first Black pitcher to win a game in the World Series. This earned him the title of National League Rookie of the Year for 1952. In 1962 he joined the Greyhound Lines, and made corporate history by becoming the first Black vice president of a major transportation company.

After formerly retiring from the company in 1987, Joe continued to provide valuable service and counsel to Viad Corp (formerly Greyhound and Dial Corporations) as a consultant until his passing. He also served as a consultant for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Mr. Black leaves to cherish his loving memories his daughter, Martha Jo Black, son, Joseph Frank Black, sisters, Phyllis Black-Greer and Allean Akins. Memorial Service was held on Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Historic First Presbyterian Church, 402 W. Monroe, Phoenix.
