James Patric (Shorty) Abell, 91, passed away peacefully on Sept. 25 surrounded by his loving family. Shorty was born Dec. 10, 1916 in Paragould, Ark., to the late Emanuel and Ella Abell and was the second of nine children.

Shorty served in the Army 3rd Infantry Division during World War II and earned 10 bronze stars for his service to his country. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Shorty came to Arizona in 1952 and became a meat cutter for Safeway Food Stores, where he met his beautiful wife Inez with whom he worked until his retirement in 1978.

However, retirement didn’t suit Shorty, so he started his own sharpening shop in his home, where he continued to work until a few weeks before his passing.

Shorty is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Inez; daughter Karan Gallagher of Coolidge, Ariz.; son Scott Abell of Victorville, Calif.; grandchildren Chris Fell, Cindy McGraugh, and Adrian Abell, along with several great-grandchildren. Shorty was blessed to have so many friends, and he and his sweet smile will be missed very much.

Services are being held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church on Wednesday (Oct. 1) at 10 a.m.

Arrangements are by David’s Desert Chapel Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
