| The Daily Miner, Kingman, AZ - Published on December 29, 2011 - HI's Goodbye HI Johnson, a longtime Kingman resident, passed away Sunday, Dec. 18, 2011. HI was born in De Soto, Mo., on April 9, 1929. As a young boy, HI moved with his family to Globe, Ariz., where he attended high school and married his high school sweetheart, Ella. They married in Globe in 1950. Their first of two sons, Terry, was born in Globe in 1951. HI started his career with the J.C. Penney Company in 1949 as a stock boy. HI was transferred to Safford, Ariz., where their second son, Jerry, was born in 1956. Over the years, HI moved up through the ranks of the J.C. Penney Company and was transferred to Glendale, Ariz., El Centro, Calif., and promoted to manager in 1962. In 1962, HI was transferred to Kingman to manage the J.C. Penney store on Beale Street. HI became a community leader within the small Kingman community by joining the Elks, Rotary, Shriners and Masons. In 1980, HI joined the Board of Directors of the Kingman Regional Medical Center where he and a small group of Kingman residents did wonderful work for the community of Kingman. In 1989, HI retired from the J.C. Penney Company and devoted himself to community work and the work of the Kingman Regional Medical Center. HI became Chairman of the Board of the Kingman Regional Medical Center in 1989 and under his tutelage amazing community projects such as the Wellness Center, Cancer Center, Healing Gardens and other wonderful facilities were opened to the citizens of Kingman. HI was a kind, loving and devoted husband to Ella and devoted father to Terry and Jerry. HI and Ella enjoyed 61 wonderful years together, most of which were in Kingman. He is survived by his wife, Ella Johnson; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Brenda Johnson; grandchildren, Wesley Johnson, Robin (Nikki) Johnson, Cody Johnson; and by two great-granddaughters, Ryleigh and Sydney Johnson. He is also survived by Norman and Patsy Mahurin and family, Sondra Whiteaker and family. HI was a devoted family man and community service member. HI was by far one of the most wonderful, kind, and caring human beings to grace this earth. He may be gone, but will never be forgotten by those who loved him and whose lives were touched either directly or indirectly by him. Memorial services will be announced and held at a later date. However, in lieu of flowers or assistance to the family, the family is requesting donations in the name of Harold I. (HI) Johnson to the Kingman Regional Medical Center (KRMC) Foundation. |
