Valerie (Hogue) Cress

Valerie Cress, March 2, 1934 - Nov. 16, 2008

Valerie Cress was born in Seattle, Wash., and passed away at her home in Buckeye, Ariz., surrounded by friends and family. Valerie took pride and devoted her life to her husband of 55 years Bill; her children Cami, Curt and Kelly, and breeding and raising winning Quarter Horses.

When Valerie was 9, her family moved to Yuma, Ariz. It was there that her father Frank Hogue started growing produce. It was also in Yuma that Valerie met Bill Cress.

In 1957 Valerie and Bill moved to Wickenburg and began developing the F.H. Hogue Ranch in Aguila. The Cress’ moved to Aguila in 1960. It was there that they raised their family, cattle, produce and Quarter Horses. It was in 1964 that the Cress’ first got involved in horses when Cami started 4-H. From those humble beginnings the Cress’ owned, bred and showed some of the best horses in the entire country.

It was on the Aquila ranch that Schottische was born. She was by Dart Bar and out of the Cress’ mare Penny Pawnee. Schottische earned more than 600 AQHA Points in Western Pleasure and was the first horse inducted into the NSBA Hall of Fame. Bill and Valerie then bred Penny Pawnee to Arizona’s Supreme Champion, Study Hall. The resulting colt was appropriately named Physical Ed, He went on to earn four AQHA World Championships, AQHA Hi Point Pleasure Driving horse and was the earner of over 650 AQHA points. During their time in Aguila the Cress’ also stood stallions, Poco Buzz Boy, Parker’s Dandy and Mr. Red Ant. Kelly Cress won three AQHYA Reserve Championships with Tee Jay Jag, Handy Opie and home-bred Miss Red Satin.

Valerie was very involved in the Sun Circuit serving as a volunteer in the Hospitality Room for many years. After retiring the Cress’ moved to Buckeye.

Valerie is survived by her husband Bill, sister Sharon Akers, three children Cami (Rod) Elliott, Curt (Bobbi) Cress and Kelly Evans. Valerie has five grandchildren, Levi and Jani Elliott, Malerie and Coby Cress and Clay Burns.
