Robert Roy (Sandy) Sandoval

Robert Roy “Sandy” Sandoval, 72, passed away peacefully in his sleep Dec. 30, 2008.

He was born Nov. 11, 1936 in Mesa to Maria and Anastacio Sandoval. He graduated from Mesa High School in 1955 and went on to serve in the United States Army, stationed in the 480th field artillery.

After his military career, Mr. Sandoval worked for Basha’s, managed McNary General Store for Southwest Forest Industries and served as a supervisor for Whiting Brothers Stores. He moved to Kearny in 1964 where he and his family opened a chain of Circle K stores in Kearny, Superior, Globe and Miami.

In 1974, he met and wed Joan Rush. Together, they formed S-C-S Investment Corporation and purchased La Cantina Restaurant and Lounge in Kearny, Apacheland Restaurant and Lounge in Globe and Sandoval’s Fish Connection in Globe.

Mr. Sandoval served as mayor of Kearny and was also a councilmember on the Kearny Town Council. He volunteered at the Kearny Fire Department and was a charter member of the Kearny Elks and Moose lodges and a past member of the Kearny Golf Course and the Kearny Development Board. He was president and CEO of S-C-S Investment Corporation.

He leaves behind his wife, Joan Rush Sandoval; son, Robert R. Sandoval Jr. and his wife Julie of Scottsdale; daughters, Ruby Rudisill-Monte of Salt Lake City, Utah, Pearl Sandoval of Mesa and Jennifer Tafoya of Kearny; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Sandoval were held Saturday, Jan. 3, at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny.
