Valma Tietjen Hakes passed away May 28, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona, at the age of 88. She was born September 18, 1914, in Bluewater, New Mexico, the first of two children born to Alma TIETJEN and Clarinda WHETTEN. Valma met Leo Benjamin Hakes in 1927, when the Daniel Edgar Hakes family moved from California to Bluewater. They dated in high school, fell in love and were married December 19, 1933, in the Arizona Mesa Temple. The family lived in Alamogordo, New Mexico for 15 years and then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1955.

Valma spent a lifetime serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including 9 years in the Mesa Temple with her husband. Valma was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sister, Elva Roundy Lee, two brothers, Wesley Tietjen and Elbert Roundy, and a granddaughter, Lynette Hakes Christiansen. She is survived by 3 sisters, Florence Chapman (Loren), Rinda Bell, Retha Wengert (Maurice), 8 children, Glade (Janet), Glen (Josette), Gale (Glenda), LeAnna Jarman (Keith), Jane Johnson (Rulon), Karen Knight (Dennis), Dennis Lee (Sheri), ValRee, C J Meserve; 4 foster children, 36 grandchildren, and 83 great grandchildren.

Funeral service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel at 3920 N. 44th Place. The family expresses gratitude for Hospice of the Valley Coronado Home. Interment Mesa City Cemetery Arrangements Paradise Chapel Funeral Home 3934 E. Indian School Rd, Phx Az 85018. Published in the Arizona Republic on 5/31/2003.
