Ida Leona Woods, 94. Born January 13, 1911 in Dakota County, Nebraska and the last living of eight children born to Frank and Edith Brotherton. She and Walter, who preceded her in death in 1988, moved to Iowa following their marriage and remained there until relocating to Arizona 30 years ago. While in Iowa, she and Walt owned a small interstate trucking business and under the company name, Woods Transfer, actively sponsored local, amateur athletic teams coached by their oldest son. Before moving to Mesa they purchased a motor home which allowed them to spend their winters here and on The Rim after they moved.

Ida loved music and rhythm and acquired an extensive vinyl record collection to which she enjoyed listening. For 20 years she directed the Hacienda de Valencia Rhythm Band and could be seen tapping her toe and waving her baton in front of the band at various gatherings at mobile home parks and retirement homes around The Valley. Ida passed away peacefully during the early morning of November 1st, while a resident of Country Estates. Before moving there she had been a resident at Cypress Court and the Citadel retirement homes where she had been socially active.

Ida is survived by her two sons, James and his wife, Marie, and David and his wife, Nancy, both of Mesa; James' children, Linda Lee Zahnow and husband Les, Carefree, sons James, Jr., and wife Vickie in Iowa, Craig and wife Debbie in Texas, Rodney and wife Patty, also in Iowa. His youngest son, Clayton, was a casualty of Viet Nam. David and his wife Nancy, son Bradley and his wife Gina of Gilbert, Robert and wife Carol, Mesa, and John and wife Dina of Mesa. There are eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and fifteen great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation was held at Chapel of Prayer, 108 N. 56th St., Mesa, followed by a graveside service at Mesa City Cemetery. 1212 N. Center in Mesa. Published in The Arizona Republic on 11/3/2005.
