Alford Hugo Liljenberg, 92, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at the Olivia White Hospice Home.

Mr. Liljenberg was born in Cedar Glades, Ark., to Fred and Nancy Liljenberg and moved with his family as a young child to Cottonwood. He attended grammar school in Clemenceau, Ariz., and graduated from Clarkdale High School in 1935. He was the fourth of six children.

After graduating from high school, he went to work for the Clarkdale Smelter in the smelting operation (Phelps Dodge) and then transferred to the carpenter shop in downtown Clarkdale. When the smelter closed down, he then went to work for some of the top contractors in the Verde Valley. He worked for A.K. Ragle, Bert Owens, Jim Scalf and Glenn Wright building houses in the Cottonwood and Clarkdale area.

Later, he again worked for these same contractors, then became acquainted with Herb and Jane Metzger of the Flying M Ranch. He worked for them first at Bridgeport, Ariz., then later at the Flying M Ranch near Anderson Mesa.

He met his first wife, Helena Ruth Bradford, in the Verde Valley and after being married in 1942, went to live and work at Soda Springs Dude Ranch near Rimrock. His daughter, Virginia Ruth Liljenberg (now Virginia Riedel) was born at this ranch. He and Ruth were later divorced.

He was a finish carpenter and very much a perfectionist in his work. He loved the outdoors and to hunt and ride his three-wheeler. He loved living on the Flying M Ranch, where he worked for 54 years. He was a kind, loving man who was very meticulous about everything he did. He was fun and funny. He also had a serious side, especially about national politics and the state of affairs and people in this country today. He lived a full and rich life and he will be kindly remembered and missed by all those whose lives he touched.

Mr. Liljenberg is survived by his daughter, Virginia (Spence) Riedel; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister Anna C. (Don) McDonald; and six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two infant sons; his oldest son, Wayne; a grandson; sisters Stella, Vivian, Frances and Ella Mae; and his parents.

There will be a viewing at 9 a.m., followed by services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Norvel Owens Mortuary, 914 E. Route 66, in Flagstaff. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. in the family plot in Cottonwood.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Olivia White Hospice Home, P.O. Box 997, Flagstaff, Ariz., 86002, or to a favorite charity.
