James Ralph Knapp, age 52, beloved father and friend, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009 in Prescott. He was born in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 1956.

Jim's passions were family, friends and adventure. He had a very deep capacity to care for others. His sons meant the world to him, and they felt many of their greatest joys together.

Jim had an avid interest in aviation. He loved nature, the outdoors and skateboarding. He was good at skiing, and loved movies. He liked the shows Scrubs, Saving Grace, House and Lost. He loved the ocean and surfing, calling himself a "landlocked surfer." Jim was a deeply emotional person with endless enthusiasm for new ideas. He could share deep philosophical perspectives and then break into a tirade of humor. His ability to make fun of any situation and make you smile will be deeply missed.

Jim received an Associates' in Aeronautical Science from ERAU in 1991 and completed his Bachelors' and Masters' in Education at NAU. He worked in health care, education and human services and spent several years at ERAU where he helped in developing many of their events, activities and new buildings.

Jim is survived by his two sons, Jay (13) and Alex (11); his brother Bobby Knapp and wife Judy of Hawaii; and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Robert Knapp.

A Celebration of Jim's Life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009 at the Watson Lake Ramada. Recommended dress is aloha shirts, with shorts and sandals. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Surfrider Foundation (surfrider.org).
