Avis Pauline (Alexander) Agin

Dr. Avis P. Agin, 86, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on May 25, 2005. Avis was born November 27, 1918 at home in Almena, Kansas, the seventh of eight children to Charles and Grace Stone Alexander.

She attended a one room country school for 8 years before graduating from Norton High School, Norton, Kansas. Avis attended Fort Hays State College, Hays, Kansas for two years before joining the US Navy. She served her country from 1941 to 1945.

It was during this time that she met her future husband and love of her life, Ralph E. Agin. They were married on June 30, 1945 in Miami, Florida. The simple wedding ceremony initiated a glorious 56 year marriage until the passing of Ralph in February 2001. A daughter, Alicia Marie was born November 1946.

Ralph continued his career in the Navy and when possible, Avis and Alicia traveled with him. Avis always successfully accomplished the tasks of relocating the household, making a new home and establishing a strong sense of family.

Avis continued her formal education over the next several years. She received her BS in 1958, MS in 1962 and Doctorate degree in 1973. She taught elementary school in Luray, Kansas, Russell, Kansas and Scottsdale, Arizona. Avis joined the faculty at Phoenix College in Phoenix, Arizona in 1966 as a Professor of Reading and Communication.

In 1980, after retiring from Phoenix College, Avis and Ralph bought a ranch in Dewey, Arizona. Avis loved returning to her roots and reminisced about her early years on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, the beautiful sunsets and life in general. She and Ralph loved to travel and would spend the winter months on the beaches of California. Avis was a published author, "Reflections" and "Over My Shoulder". She wrote for newspapers in California, Arizona and Kansas. Her credits and accomplishments are an inspiration to all. She was a Lecturer, Speaker, Faculty Advisor to AWARE, Phoenix College Director, Past State Director Reading Association, IRA, Life Member NEA, Past Officer Arizona State Reading Counsel, Desert Area Reading Counsel, Past President Alpha Delta Kappa, Alumni Officer Sigma, Sigma, Sigma, NCTE, American Association of Women in College, Affirmative Action Counsel, Woman of the Year, Educational Consultant Cornet Films and Worlds Who's Who of Women, Avis was active in Eastern Star, Administrative Board Member Central United Methodist Church, and Building Committee member for the Humboldt Senior Center.

Avis was a dedicated educator, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved life, her family and her many cherished friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters and her husband Ralph. She is survived by her daughter, Alicia Strother and son-in-law Jerry of Phoenix, Arizona, sister Betty Chmiel of Tampa, Florida, a grandson Brian Strother of Fort Collins, Colorado, granddaughter Kristi Strother of Aurora, Colorado, great grandsons Quentin and Ethan Strother of Fort Collins, Colorado.

Services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., Phoenix, Az. on Friday, June 3rd at 9:30 a.m.

Memorial services will be held at the Humboldt Bible Church, 2500 Old Black Canyon Hwy, Humboldt, Arizona on Saturday, June 4th at 10:00 am.

The family suggests memorial contributions in lieu of flowers to the Humboldt Bible Church, P.O. Box 296, Humboldt, Arizona, 86329.

Dr. Avis Pauline Agin, 86, of Phoenix, Arizona, passed away on May 25, 2005.

Services will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, June 3 at 9:30 a.m., with memorial service June 4, 10 a.m. at Humboldt Bible Church, 2500 Old Black Canyon Hwy.
