Elizabeth Faye (Betty) (Berryhill) Younger

Posted 2012-03-15 by Pat Wilson
Elizabeth Faye "Betty" Younger passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on September 30, 2006, at her home in Phoenix, Arizona.

Betty will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered.

She was born Dec. 19, 1921 in Denver, CO. to Dora and James Craig Berryhill.

She often reminisced about her years growing up with her seven beloved brothers and sisters ('Brother,' 'Sis,' 'Billie,' 'Dood,' Bruce, 'Marj,' and 'Neetsie'), and the childhood friends with whom she stayed in contact throughout her life.

She was graduated from West High School in Denver, and attended Colorado State College of Education (now University of Northern Colorado) in Greeley, CO. She worked throughout her college years to supplement the scholarship assistance she received. She was a member of the Pi Kappa Sigma sorority.

Upon graduation she took a teaching job at Marin Junior College in Kentfield, CA. There she met her lifelong love, Bud Younger, and they were married on Dec. 14, 1946, in Mill Valley, CA.

After their marriage, Bud's baseball career took Bud and Betty to Quebec, Canada, as well as other places across the country. In 1948 they settled in Tempe, AZ., and moved to Phoenix in 1955. In addition to raising two children, Betty enjoyed working as a secretary for the Arizona State University Athletic Department, Camelback Inn, and Allied Construction Company. In 1983 she retired from her work as a supervisor of property appraisers with the Maricopa County Assessor's Office.

Betty enjoyed sewing and gardening, and her day was not complete until the cross-word puzzle was solved. She was an avid bridge player who shared many years of laughter with her long-time bridge club companions. In recent years she loved decorating, tending the garden, and entertaining family and friends at the summer home Betty and Bud enjoyed in the mountains of Northern Arizona. Betty delighted in planning family adventures and activities, which included travel to Hawaii and many other destinations across the U.S. Trips to exotic places in China, Europe, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand brought her many memorable experiences.

She adored her grandchildren, and always looked forward to watching them participate in sports events, dance recitals, plays, and other activities as they grew into adulthood. Betty was an extremely dedicated and hard-working member of her church, contributing in countless ways to further the Lord's work. Her faith in God was strong and never faltered.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, James P. 'Bud' Younger; her children Vickie (Gary) Venturo; James P. Jr. 'Rook' (Debbie) Younger; her sister, Geraldine 'Billie Sue' Mosier; and her cherished grandchildren Tori (Brent) Havins, Paul Venturo, Marcus Venturo, and Kelyn Elizabeth Younger. She also enjoyed the love of her many nieces and nephews and their extended families.

Betty's generosity, kind heart, enthusiasm, and untiring determination were an inspiration to her family and to all who knew her. Life just won't be the same without our "Nan."

Services to celebrate Betty's life were held at Creighton United Methodist Church, 4900 E. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85018. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Betty's name to Creighton United Methodist Church, at the above address, for the church's Memorial Fund.
