Joseph O. Kawulok

Lt. Col. Joseph O. Kawulok, USAF Ret. 87, passed on peacefully March 24, 2008 to join his beloved wife of 64 years, Marian for eternity.

Born in Humboldt, Arizona 5 January 1921, he graduated from Prescott High School in 1938 and entered Arizona State College, completing three years of study.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on 8 December 1941 and was Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in 1942. He served in several assignments during the war, rising to the grade of 1st Lieutenant. While serving at Dover AAF Base, Delewar in 1944, he fell in love and in March 1944 married Marian E. Mitchell of Smyrna, Del. Separated from active duty in the AAF and entering the USAAF Reserves in 1946, he returned to Humboldt, AZ to join Marian and their daughter, Marion Ellen born in December 1944. He returned to extended active duty with the creation of the United States Air Force and for the next 17 years he served at numerous postings in the United States and Europe.

During this period, his son Joseph O., Jr. was born in December 1951 at Erding, AB, occupied Germany and daughter Celeste Elizabeth was born in March 1955 at Ellsworth AFB S.D. He retired as Commander 2033rd Communications Squadron AFCS at McClelland AFB CA, on 31 October 1966 in the grade of Lieutenant Colonel after 24 years of Service; mainly in the Strategic Air Command and Air Force Communications Service. He served in the Berlin Airlift, the Cuban Missile Crisis and Berlin Crisis.

Moving to Tucson upon his retirement, he began a new career in 1967 with the Civil Service at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., in the Sentinel ABM Program. He retired from the Civil Service in 1983 as a Comptroller for the Army Strategic Communications Command.

He is survived by his daughters, Marion E. Kawulok of Tucson, Ariz. and Celeste E. Kawulok of Clouquet, Minn. son, Joseph O. Kawulok, Jr. of Alamogordo, N.M. and grandchildren, Colin Middlemist and Claire Middlemist of Clouquet, Minn.

A Rosary will be held at BRING'S BROADWAY CHAPEL, 6910 E. Broadway Friday, April 18, 2008 at 400 p.m. Mass will be celebrated 1000 a.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church, 1375 S. Camino Seco.

Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Desert Cemetery.

The family suggests contributions in Joseph's name be made to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, 140 W. Speedway Blvd., Suite 100, Tucson, Ariz., 85705.
