Carl Douglas Matson, know as “Doug” to family and friends, died peacefully at the Nathan Adelson Hospice in Las Vegas March 16, 2012. Following a life-threatening bout with cancer, he was told that age 60 might not be attainable. When he celebrated his 80th birthday Aug 8, 1980, he had outlived all those physicians.

Doug was born in the Bronx, N.Y., to immigrant parents from Finland, although they were both of Swedish heritage. When he was 3 years old, a move was made to the state of Washington where he graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle and promptly went to work for Pacific Bell Telephone Co. That employment was interrupted when the Korean War broke out. Doug was sent with the Marines to Korea, landed in Inchon and became a member of the Chosen Few — those hardy souls that marched from the reservoir to the coast of South Korea. He suffered severe frostbite to his feet and ankles, which caused problems in his later years.

When he returned to Seattle, he was again working for the telephone company and stayed with them for 33 years. Upon that retirement he was employed in the Communications Department of the University of Washington until he reached final retirement.

In 1952, he married Jacqueline R. Anderson and they raised two daughters, Carleen Matson and Denise Matson (Howard) Benzel. He was a very proud grandfather who thought his granddaughter, BreAnne, and grandson, Quin, were superior to all others. Doug and Jacqueline would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on the 29th of this month. He also considered Noreen and Dick Thomas and their son, Paul, as his immediate family even though they were his wife’s relatives.

An ardent golfer, he picked Lake Havasu City for his retirement years where he spent seven as a snowbird and 12 as a full-time resident. He was a member of the Elks, the Marine Corps League, VFW, a lifetime member of Telephone Pioneers and his very favorite — The Lake Havasu Yacht Club.

Services will be at the Lake Havasu Yacht Club May 5, at 11:30 a.m. We will celebrate Doug’s life with a luncheon and services conducted by the Marine Corps League. In addition there will be music and a Christian memorial.

Donations may be made to the Marine Corps League of Lake Havasu PO Box 311, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405 or to the Lake Havasu Yacht Club Memorial Fund, 631 London Bridge Road, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86403.
