Albert Vincent Lopes

Albert Vincent Lopes Passed away on October 25th, at the age of 88. He was born on February 13, 1919, in Humboldt, Arizona, the son of Tilia-Alma Frendes and Alberto Lopes.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Charlotte, and his three loving daughters, their spouses, and seven grandchildren.

Albert's youth included ranching and hunting in Arizona with his grandfather, as well as fishing off the coast of Monterey when he lived in Pacific Grove. His early experiences led to a lifelong love of horses, dogs, and the ocean.

Albert was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served 22 years in the military, fighting in both WWII and the Korean War. He rose to the rank of Captain. He earned numerous decorations for valor and courage, including four Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star. Albert served in the 3rd Infantry, the Rock of the Marnes.

After retiring from military service, Albert earned a Master's Degree in Education from San Jose State University and proceeded to teach public school for San Jose Unified School District for the following 25 years. His last years as a teacher were working at John Muir Junior High School in San Jose.

Albert was devoted to the sport of handball, and he regularly attended Central YMCA in San Jose for close to 40 years. Besides participating competitively up to Master's level, Albert spent countless weekends organizing the handball tournaments, including his own tournament in 1984.

Visitation and Funeral Services will be held at Willow Glen Funeral Home, 1039 Lincoln Avenue in San Jose on Thursday, November 1st. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Activity Center, 2380 Enborg Lane, San Jose, Calif., 95128.
