John C. Thoren

John C. Thoren, Jr., beloved son of John C. and Mary E. Thoren, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2006.

John had been a long term resident of Tempe.

John was born May 1, 1939 in Rockford, Illinois.

John is survived by a number of family members, including cousins Mickey Bourke (Coronado, CA), Linda Lewis (Rio Rico, AZ), Ardith Williams (Connecticut), Roberta Marshall (Minnesota), and aunts Edith Hedberg (Phoenix) and Elizabeth Ahrens (Illinois). John also has a number of family members in Sweden. John is also survived by many, many friends including Pete and Karen Faggella (Tempe) and Les and Barbara Maurseth (Phoenix).

For most of his adult life John was the owner and operator of Thoren's Architectural Woodwork, Ltd. a Tempe firm started by his father in 1944. John learned the business from the floor up, literally, as his father started him as a floor sweeper. John was active in the affairs of the Architectural Woodwork Institute and other standard-setting woodworking organizations, Projects of the firm were many and varied, including the Arizona Club, Westcourt in the Buttes, Hyatt Regency at Gainey Ranch, several airport terminals, many law offices, renovations of New Mexico and Texas State Capitols, and much more.

A graduate of Arizona State University, John donated labor and materials to assist in the renovation of the University Club and the Old Main as well as other projects at Arizona State University. John was a proud, active member of Sigma Nu beginning in his college days. John served in many capacities with Sigma Nu, including as its national president (Regent) from 1982 to 1984 and as a Board Member of the Sigma Nu Foundation. Even during his recent illnesses, John remained active in Sigma Nu. Locally, John was a tireless supporter of the Zeta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Nu at Arizona State University. He was President of the House Corporation and continued as a member of the board. John will be sorely missed by the local alumni and chapter members of Zeta Upsilon.

A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, July 9th at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, 2300 W. Van Buren, Phx., AZ.
