The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Saturday, January 24, 2009 Bobbie Root, age 67, died in November after a long illness. She grew up in Kansas but lived many years in Arizona. A local Prescott character in the best sense of the word, Bobbie loved this town where she'd been a community leader and advocate for protection of the land. She ran for City Council and worked within the Sierra Club, using her energy to help further what she felt to be important democratic principles. In her efforts to live frugally and avoid owning a car, she drove a small motorcycle around town with a sign on the back: Grandma on Board. Along with her congregation, Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship - where she held several leadership positions - she was instrumental in creating the first Empty Bowls program to feed the hungry, which has grown into a community-wide celebration every fall. Bobbie was instrumental in the beginnings of the Prescott co-housing community, Manzanita Village, and lived there seven years. She felt strongly about their ideals of sharing resources and saving the open land, and she was very proud of their accomplishments. Cooking and entertaining were among her talents, and her interests extended as well to hiking and sports. She was also a champion bridge player. Her parties were legendary, whether to celebrate the end of her career as a legal secretary or to mark a new beginning. She enjoyed the cocktail hour too, inviting her neighbors most afternoons. Bobbie's interest in the arts extended from writing to theater. She wrote poetry and sang in community choruses. She played the recorder, worked in clay and gave many talks, appearing on local television and publishing a story in the collection, "I Thought My Father Was God." An outrageous fan of professional tennis, Bobbie attended the matches with red, white and blue hair, her laughter echoing throughout Prescott. She enjoyed putting on a show, from the sublime to the silly. Her friends from the many areas her life touched will continue to miss her and her zest for her ideals and passion for the landscape of Arizona. Memorial gifts may be sent in Bobbie's name to Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 945 Rancho Vista Drive, Prescott, Ariz., 86303. Information provided by survivors. |
