Mary E. (Kaufman) Wadley

Second Lt. Mary E. Stewart-Wadley, 88, of Prescott, Ariz., a WWII Army Nurse Corp Veteran, a member of our country's Greatest Generation, fought her final battle with emphysema. She passed Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, in Prescott, with her son John Stewart, granddaughter Alana Stewart and Prescott friends at her side.

Mary was born Dec. 17, 1920, to the late Carl and Adah Kaufman in Sapulpa, Okla.

She graduated from Hillcrest Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Tulsa, Okla., in 1942. She worked for Arizona Western College as College Nurse for 20 years and retired in 1983 in Yuma. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Yuma. She traveled extensively throughout the world, but the highlight of her travels was her trip to the Holy Land.

She was a summer visitor to Prescott for 10 years and later she and her son John moved to Prescott in 1999. She volunteered at the VA nursing home in the summers. She enjoyed the summer music on the square, especially that of the Salvation Army with her first dog Sizzy. She loved the Prescott summers and enjoyed walking and hiking Thumb Butte with her son, granddaughter and dog.

She appreciated the cards from Prescott Sunup Rotary and the Empire Beauty College, where she had been a customer for 20 years. Mary was a Christian; now she is at rest.

Mary was preceded in death by her husbands Earl W. Stewart, and Art Wadley, her son James (Jimmy) Stewart and brother Carl John Kaufman.

She is survived by her son John R. Stewart, granddaughter Alana Stewart, stepdaughter Betty Mol, stepson Earl W. Stewart Jr., niece Becky Kaufman Walker and nephew Chris Kaufman.

The family would like to thank all of you who made her life better: The Prescott Veterans Center Red Team, Dr. Jane Newman and all the staff at Prescott Veterans Center who have treated her over the past 15 years, Joseph Leidinger, her doctor for the past five years in Prescott, The Safeway Pharmacy Willow Creek, the PC Unit at YRMC and the harpist.

Thanks to Johnny the labrador who gave mom company and joy the past four years.

A memorial service with full military honors will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Feb. 28, 2009, at The Prescott United Methodist Church, Prescott, Ariz., with Rev. Clent Walker and Pastor Nancy Cushman officiating.

A graveside service will take place at her final resting place at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, Okla. She will join her son James (Jimmy) Stewart, her husbands Earl Walter Stewart and Art Wadley.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations be made in Mary's memory to the Prescott Sunup Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 3249, Prescott Ariz., 86302.
