Betty F. (Roberts) Fitzhugh

Betty F. Carson Fitzhugh died on March 26, 2006 at the Margaret T. Morris Center. She was 91 years old. Betty was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., on May 29, 1914, to Clyde and Ruby (Frazier) Roberts.

Her family moved to Arizona in 1918. She was a graduate of Phoenix Union High School, Phoenix College and Arizona Teacher's College, now Northern Arizona University.

In 1936 Betty moved to Kinlichee, Ariz. where she and her husband, Bill Carson, taught school. In 1945 they moved to Hillside, Ariz., where Betty ran the Hillside Grocery Store and later became Post Mistress.

She was a member of the Yavapai Cowbelles for many years and she and Bill were well-known for their involvement with square dancing. She
finished Bill's year as teacher in 1958 after he and son Bobby were killed in a plane crash over the Mogollon Rim. Two other Bagdad school officials were also killed in that crash.

Betty continued living in Hillside, where she gifted land to the current Hillside Bible Church. Prior to that she and Bill had gifted land to the Hillside Elementary School.

In October 1977 Betty married Andrew F. Fitzhugh and moved to Longmeadow, Maine, where she lived until 1999, when she and Andy returned to Arizona.

Betty is survived by sons, Stuart (Joanne) Carson and Clyde (Christy) Carson of Hillside; a niece, Becky (Bud) VanCura of Prescott Valley; and grandchildren, James (Kelly) Carson of Bluff, Utah, William S. Carson, III of DeKalb. Ill., and Travis Carson of Dewey.

She was predeceased by husband Bill Carson (1958), son Bobby (1958), husband Ben Holley (1976), husband Andrew F. Fitzhugh (2001), sister Peggy Riggs (2000) step-sons, Charles Fitzhugh, William (Tiger) Fitzhugh and step-daughter Mary Fitzhugh.

Memorial services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Highway 89 in Prescott.

Interment will be at a later date at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery
in Phoenix.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Margaret T. Morris
Center or the Alzheimer's Association, both in Prescott.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Margaret T. Morris Center, especially Ashleigh, Olivia, Kelly and Johanna. They gave much love and tender care.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
