The Arizona Daily Star, Tucson, Arizona Sunday, February 5, 1995 Mass set for Louis Hesla, longtime Tucson resident A memorial Mass will be celebrated Tuesday for Louis E. Hesla Jr., a 55-year resident of Tucson who died on Jan. 17 at the age of 80. Hesla worked for Southern Pacific for 35 years, retiring in 1974 at age 60. He then took up scuba diving, sailing, dog breeding and the theater. He served in the U.S. Power Squadron and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He taught classes in seamanship, boating safety and celestial navigation. He was a dog enthusiast who bred Samoyeds and huskies, and made his stage debut last Christmas as King Melchior in the annual holiday production of ''Follow the Star'' at Christ Church United Methodist. Hesla was born in Prescott on June 10, 1914, the son of Louis Edward and Lula Estella (Hardin) Hesla. His father and uncle, who owned a jewelry store, settled in Prescott in the 1860s. Hesla's father, Louis Sr., also pursued business in cattle ranching, mining and optometry. Louis Hesla Jr. studied optometry as well. He moved to Tucson in 1939, took a job with Southern Pacific and obtained a bachelor's degree in agricultural education from the University of Arizona in the early 1960s. His first wife, the former Anne Miller of Buckeye, with whom he had two daughters, died in 1949. He married Anne Marie Pearson in 1952. He is survived by his wife, Anne Marie of Tucson; daughters Maybelle L. Hesla of Dana Point, Calif., and Martha A. Hesla of Tucson; and a grandson, James E. Hesla of Seattle. The memorial Mass will be held at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Arizona Newman Center, 1615 E. Second St. A memorial service was held at Christ Church United on Jan. 20. |
