Charles D. Treleven, 79, a newspaper editor for more than 40 years, died at his Tucson home May 23 after suffering a stroke.

Born in Nekoosa, Wis., Treleven earned a journalism degree in the late 1930s from the University of Wisconsin, where he also played on the ice hockey team, said daughter Marcia Donovan.

He started his journalism career as a reporter with the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune, and served in the Army during World War II, she said.

His newspaper career included editing positions on the Milwaukee Journal, the European edition of Stars and Stripes and the Philadelphia Bulletin. He was associate editor of United Feature Syndicate from 1956 to 1971 in New York City, Donovan said.

In 1974, he was awarded the Gold Key by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, an award for those who made significant contributions to U.S. high school publications.

In 1978 he and his wife, Dorothy Helen, moved to Prescott, where he wrote columns and articles for the Prescott Courier, his daughter said. They moved back to Tucson about 1988, she said.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by another daughter, Georgia Louise Treleven, of Philadelphia.

A private memorial service was to be held today.
