Jerome A. Schopen

Jerome A. Schopen, age 94, passed away July 29, 2012. He was born Aug. 7, 1917, in Jefferson Wis., the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Vogel) Schopen. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1935. Jerome was married to Elizabeth (Betty) Hernday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Jefferson, Wis., May 31, 1948.

He served in the US Navy on active duty from March 1941 through September 1945 during World War II as Chief Petty Officer and the Navy Reserve for three years. He was employed by Carnation Company in Oconomowoc, Wis., in office management from 1946 through 1982.

Jerome was active in St. Vincent de Paul Society, serving as Council President for many years and held an honorary life membership in Knights of Columbus. He and Betty were avid square dancers for many years and belonged to many card clubs. Upon retirement in 1983, they spent winters in Lake Havasu City and summers in Wisconsin but eventually became full-time residents of Lake Havasu City.

A wonderful and helpful husband and father, he always went out of his way to connect with others. Jerome will be warmly remembered, by family and friends, for his generosity, devotion to his faith and fine example.

Jerome is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty); daughters, Mary Grunewald, of Pewaukee, Wis., Judith (Jeff) Schopen-Coleman, of Flagstaff, Ariz. and Jane (Doug) Schopen-Bonamici, of Lake Havasu City; sons, Dennis and Paul, of Lake Havasu City, James, of Chino Valley, Ariz. and Ned (Colette), of Flagstaff, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Memorial mass and reception will be at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church on Friday, August 17, at 11 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to Oremus Rosary Makers or St. Vincent DePaul Society.
