Sherrilyn Jo Reece Pitman, age 62, died on July 2, 2007 at Hospice Family Care in Prescott, Arizona. She was born November 13, 1944 in Phoenix, Arizona, to Joseph Reece and the late Lovina Reece.

She was a 4th generation native of Arizona. She graduated from West High School in 1962, and attended BYU on a drama scholarship.

Sherrilyn married Fred Pitman on December 20th, 1963. They lived the majority of their lives together in Phoenix, Arizona until moving to Mayer, Arizona in 1989. Sherrilyn volunteered as President of the Arizona Chapter of Citizens for Decency Through Law in the late 70's and early 80's. She helped write the original homeschool legislation in Arizona, which was passed into law in 1985. She was known as the "Mother of Homeschooling" in Arizona. Her signature achievement was developing a reading system all could use. This was her passion. She devoted her life to children and education. She was involved in more good causes than can be mentioned. She wanted to better the lives of those around her. Her giving heart and beautiful smile will be greatly missed.

Sherrilyn is survived by her husband, Fred, their 13 children, Cammy, Tony, Debbie, Matt, Becca, Jim, Elizabeth, Lisa, Deanna, Tim, David, Rebecca, and Ashley; 29 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; and 1 sister, Linda Ray. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Craig and Sterling and an infant daughter, Angela.

The funeral service will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' Spring Valley Ward Building located at 17330 E. Mule Deer Dr., Mayer, Arizona, 86333 (located HWY 69, 2 miles west of Cordes Junction) on Saturday July 7th, 2007 at 10:00am. She will be buried at the family memorial site located at 7789 E. Grape Vine Road, Mayer, Ariz., 86333.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints' Perpetual Education Fund at your local LDS Church. Be sure to specify the donation to the Perpetual Education Fund.
