Fred Francis Wells

Fred Francis Wells, one of the icons of the gunsmith world, died on Jan. 15, 2006, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Prescott.

Mr. Wells, age 86, created custom firearms for a worldwide clientele and
inspired generations of gunsmiths during his six-decade career.

Fred was born on Nov. 26, 1919, in LaPorte, Ind., and was a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II. A longtime National Rifle Association member, he held an honorary lifetime membership in the Custom Gunmakers Guild of America. Fred was also a member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

He is survived by his wife Rachel; two brothers, Lyie Wells of Henderson, Nev., and Homer Wells of Tonto Basin, Ariz.; a sister Jean
Cloudt of Payson, Ariz.; eight children; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, 2006, at 1:30 p.m. at the American Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1085 Scott Drive, Prescott, Ariz., with Deacon Tony Humphrey as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the National Rifle Association.

The Hampton Funeral Home was entrusted and honored to assist Fred's family with the arrangements.
