Marcelino F. Varela

Born in Cottonwood, Arizona on Oct. 7, 1925.
Departed on July 12, 2002 and resided in Cottonwood, Arizona.

Marcelino Varela, 76, born in Cottonwood on October 7, 1925. He was raised in Cottonwood and graduated from Clarkdale High School in 1943.

He served in the Air Force during World War II as a tailguner.

He married Vera Varela on May 22, 1950. He worked for the government in Flagstaff at the Navajo Ordinance and when it closed down he transferrred to Veterans Administration Medical Center in Prescott. He retired with 30 years of service.

In March of 1972 he opened the Hacienda Inn Restaurant in Cottonwood where he worked with his family until the last days of his life.

He is a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cottonwood and was an inactive meber of the Verde Council, Knights of Columbus.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Vera; his children, Patricia Santillan, Manuel Varela, Joseph Varela and wife Janice Varela, Helen Varela, Daniel Varela, Margaret Gudino and husband Robert Gudino, Anna Rodriguez and husband Marco Rodriguez; a sister, Rose Flores; a brother, Raymond Varela; fourteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, July 17 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 6-7 with a Recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM. A funeral Mass will held on Tuesday, July 18 in the Church at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Cottonwood Cemetery, Cottonwood, Arizona.

A recption will follow the services at Tony Ortiz's home, 118 S. 14th St and at Rosie Lee's home at 126 S. 14th St. in Cottonwood, Ariz.

Westcott Funeral Home is directing the arrangements.
