Gilbert R. Gonzales, age 85, of Surprise Ariz. passed away on Oct. 27, 2012 at his residence in Surprise, Ariz.

He was born in Miami, Ariz. on April 15, 1927, the son of Trinidad and Refugio (Regaldo) Gonzales.

Gilbert grew up in Miami and attended Miami High School. He married Irene Cienfuegos and soon after he joined the US Army. Stationed in Korea, he served his country proudly during World War II.

When he returned he worked for the mines for two years and then moved to Phoenix, where he got a job with the City of Phoenix. He retired from there in 1988. Gilbert enjoyed riding his bike, loved to golf, and watched all sports, especially football and basketball. He liked to spend time with his family and friends, who will miss him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Irene Gonzales; his brothers, Jose Sanez, Augustine Gonzales, Vicente Gonzales; and his sisters, Lupe Ortega, Carmen Macias, Angela Amado, Simon Ybarra.

Gilbert is survived by his children, Robert “Bob” Gonzales and Virginia Porras, Manuel Gonzales, Christine Lugo and Gilbert Gonzales, Jr.; his brothers, Ramon Gonzales, Jesus Gonzales and Manuel Gonzales; his sisters, Eleanor Ramos and Adela Lopez; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Visitation was on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Miami, Ariz., followed by Rosary at 10:30 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m.

Interment was at Mountain Breeze Memorial Gardens in Miami, Ariz.
