Fred (Ted) MacPherson Jr. passed away at the age of 76 on Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, at his home in Dewey, Ariz., after a long battle with cancer.

Ted was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on May 22, 1932, to his parents, Fred L. and Thelma MacPherson. Ted was quite the sportsman at Comstock High, excelling in baseball, football and his most cherished game of basketball, where he later graduated in 1950.

Ted joined the Coast Guard in 1951. He served aboard a destroyer escort making runs to all the islands in the area including Japan, Philippines and Alaska. He later was assigned to the intelligence office in Hawaii. Ted graduated from the University of Michigan, which led to several successful careers but ultimately that of an aerospace engineer.

Ted was a renaissance man with many joys and hobbies. He enjoyed the art of travel, cooking, photography and especially cars. He loved jazz and the blues, although he himself was never blue. He always made us laugh and was the first to play a practical joke. He loved nature and wildlife but not more than his friends and family. He was a kind, gentle man who was generous and touched many lives. Everybody loved Ted.

He is survived by his spouse Laura; his stepdaughter Stephanie Cunningham; son-in-law Jay; grandchild Jaelyn; and sister Jean Vennard from Ohio. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter Michelle MacPherson and his parents.

A celebration of Ted's life will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at All Saints Anglican Church, 1806 N. Savage Lane, Prescott, Ariz.
