Sylvester Bufkin, 91, of Kirkland, Ariz., born July 25, 1912, in Mobile, Ala., died Wednesday, May 5 2004, in Kirkland.

Private cremation was at Bradshaw Crematory, Prescott Valley.

Sylvester Hassel Bufkin age 91, died May 5, 2004, at his home in Kirkland, Ariz. He was born July 25, 1912, in Mobile, Ala., and raised in Mississippi. He was the youngest of four children, having two brothers and a sister.

Sylvester leaves his niece, Joann Fort and family, in Oregon; his stepdaughter-in-law. Doris Loomis and family in Montana; and many friends. He lost his mother when he was 13 years old.

Sylvester and his father and an older brother placer mined and lived off the land during the Depression and was an excellent hunter. Later, he worked in forest cutting and scaling logs, and was a saw filer, when he joined the Army.

Sylvester served his country, in the U.S. Army, from May 1942 to December 1945, as a sergeant in the 336th AD Squadron, 2nd Combat Cargo Group, in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign (Southern Philippines, Western Pacific and New Guinea). Sylvester received the following decorations and citations during his service; Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon for New Guinea Campaign Star, Southern Philippines Campaign Star, Luzon Campaign Star, Ryukyus Campaign Star, and Western Pacific Campaign Star. He also won the Philippines Liberation Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.

Sylvester attended Headquarters Technical School, Army Air Corps Central Technical Training Command, and Non-Commissioned Officers School in Sioux Falls, S.D. Sylvester maintained an unblemished record and received an honorable discharge from the Army on Dec. 11, 1945.

He later owned and operated Sylvester's Key Shop in the Phoenix area, until he retired.

Sylvester was a member of the Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge. He was initiated April 28, 1947, passed May 23, 1947, and raised June 27,
1947, in the Plumas Lodge No. 60, in Quincy, Calif. He was a past Master of Aztlan Lodge No. 1, in Prescott, Ariz.

Sylvester was honest and lived by the Golden Rule. He was a loving husband and father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his step-grandchildren, and their progeny.

He loved to dance, play cribbage, and to cut and chop wood. Sylvester was a young at heart and brought joy and happiness into the lives of others. He has encouraged and supported others in regaining their health and confidence in themselves; he was also a very good and wise man. His family, friends and neighbors will miss him very much.

A private cremation was held at the Bradshaw Crematory in Prescott Valley, Ariz.

Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
