Charles "Norman" Howard, 87, of Green Valley, Ariz., died May 11, 2004.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at Winterset Cemetery with Pastor Don Frank officiating.

Norman Howard was born Jan. 8, 1917, to Walter and Vada (Armstrong) Howard of Peru. He grew up in Scott Township and attended rural grade school. He was a 1937 graduate of Peru High School. In November 1937, he married Lena Butt. They resided in Peru until 1956, when they moved to Winterset. Norman was a custodian and bus driver for the Winterset School District for 20 years. In 1968, he started a carpet business, which he operated for 30 years. When he retired at age 81, he and his wife moved to Green Valley. He had been a member of the Methodist Church in Peru, Winterset and Green Valley.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Fred, and a sister, Frances.

He is survived by his wife, Lena, of Green Valley, Ariz.; one daughter, Gerry Kappely of Green Valley, Ariz.; two sons, Rex Howard of Ozark, Mo., and Ron Howard of Henderson, Nev.; a sister, Jeanne Mirock of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Peru United Methodist Church. Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Oak Park Chapel in Winterset.
