The Oregonian, Portland, Oregon Saturday, May 4, 1996 A memorial service for Frank Albert Gianelli, a former staff member of The Oregonian, will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 1996, in A.L. Moore & Sons Mortuary in Phoenix, Ariz. He died April 29 at age 79. Mr. Gianelli was born July 29, 1916, in Portland. He began his newspaper career in 1933 as a copyboy for The Oregonian, advancing to staff writer and assistant to the sports editor, L.H. Gregory, until 1943, when he moved to Phoenix as associate director of public relations for Southwest Airlines. He joined the Arizona Republic in 1944 and was a copy editor, news editor, city editor, state editor, aviation editor, columnist and sports editor. He retired in 1981. He once was named Arizona Sportswriter of the Year. He was president of Phoenix Press Box Association in 1954 and was elected a director of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers in 1966. He was a correspondent for Sports Illustrated and took photos for Arizona Highways magazine. Surviving are his sons, Michael of Redondo Beach, Calif., Steven of Prescott, Paul of Flagstaff, Ariz., David of Phoenix, Ariz., and James of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter, Martha Bengston of Tempe, Ariz.; and six grandchildren. The family suggests remembrances be to the Albertina Kerr Centers for Children. |
