Marilyn Patricia (Hudgin) Campbell

Marilyn Patricia Campbell, RN MS, 70, of Gilbert, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2005, following elective surgery.

Marilyn was born December 19, 1934, in Picton, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Tucson in her eighteenth year, with her parents, Louis O. Hudgin and Marion G. Whattam Hudgin.

She graduated from Tucson St. Mary's RN program in 1955, a career goal she had had since childhood. Marilyn received her BS in Nursing in 1970, and her MS in 1972, both from ASU. Her working career included Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and general surgical nursing in hospitals in Atlanta, GA, Kansas City, MO, McNary, AZ, and Mesa, AZ. In August of 1972, she entered a new field, Nursing Education, at Mesa Community College (MCC), where she worked until her retirement in January of 1994. Marilyn served as Director of Nursing at MCC from 1984-1994, and was elected to the MCC Faculty Senate. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Healthcare Network in Mesa (1984-1996), was a member of the Board of Governors National League for Nursing (NLN) (1991-1993), and was elected as Chairperson of the NLN Council of Associate Degree Programs (1991-1993).

Marilyn met Walter G. Hodges at Mesa Community College and they married in May of 1986. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Bigelow, of Leamington, Ontario, Canada, and her niece and nephew, Lucy Coppola of Ontario and David Bigelow of Montana. She is also survived by her husband Walter G. Hodges of Gilbert, stepson and wife Joe and Jacque Hodges and their daughter Kristen of Ahwatukee, stepdaughter Jennifer (Hodges) Waters and her children, Amber Rebecca and Jared of Chandler

Memorial services were held August 24, 2005, at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 S. Dobson Rd., Mesa, AZ 85202, (480) 838-5639. A reception followed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marilyn P. Campbell Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund, to be made available to students accepted into the Mesa Community College Nursing Program. Checks may be made payable to the Maricopa Foundation (with the designation of the above fund), in care of the MCC Development Office, 1833 W. Southern Ave., Mesa, AZ 85202.
