Betty J. (Blake) Stewart

Betty Jim Blake Stewart, age 77 and resident of Tempe, Ariz., embarked on her greatest journey of her life on Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, to be with the Lord and her parents Gober T. and Linnie Huckabee Blake.

Betty is survived by her son, L. Blake Stewart, and his wife Karen.

Born April 9, 1928, and raised in Bonham, Texas, she graduated from Bonham High School in 1945 with honors and was active in numerous clubs and social organizations. She was an accomplished pianist and dancer. She attended Texas State Women's College where she was a member of two sororities.

In 1953 she married T. Frank Stewart.

They were part of a 20-year partnership that owned and operated several independent newspapers in the Western U.S. and Canada that included the Yuma Daily Sun, Prescott Courier and Tucson Daily Star.

In 1971 she started working in newspaper advertising and worked for the Scottsdale Progress, Tempe Daily News and the East Valley Tribune; there she found many great wonderful friends.

She retired from the newspaper business to work as office manager with the Animal Hospital on Scottsdale Road, where she found many more loving co-workers and very dear friends, including a few four legged ones. She retired in 1977 to battle cancer and won, to enjoy many more years of life. Betty succumbed to complications from a hip fracture.

Services will be held at Green Acres Mortuary at 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale, Ariz., on Saturday Feb. 4, 2006, at 2:30 p.m.

There will be a viewing prior to services starting at 12:30 p.m.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice of the Valley 1510 E. Flower St., Phoenix, Ariz., 85014.
