Lee Walton Kornegay

Lee Walton Kornegay, 88, of Claypool, AZ died February 20, 2006. Belva, his wife of 62 years, was at his side.

Mr. Kornegay was born in Marval, Arkansas in 1917. At three years of age he moved with his family to Miami, AZ.

In 1940 he graduated with a B.A. degree in Industrial Arts from Arizona State University (formerly Arizona State College), in the 1950's he earned an M.A. degree in Education, also from ASU. He served as industrial arts instructor at Miami High School and George Washington Elementary School for several years before becoming principal of the latter. From 1972 until his retirement in 1982 he served as assistant superintendent of Miami School District.

Mr. Kornegay was a dedicated community and church volunteer, he served as President of the Miami Rotary Club; he was a Scout Master for 21 years and was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver medal. In 2004, he was the parade Grand Marshal of Miami's Boom Town Spree. Miami's jr. high school is named Lee Kornegay Middle School in honor of his commitment of service to his community.

Survivors include his wife, Belva; son, Joel and daughter-in-law, Beverly of Gilbert; son, Larry and daughter-in-law, Paula of Paradise Valley; grandchildren, Chris, Eric, Jessie, and William; great-grand-daughter, Ella Kornegay; and an aunt Mary Grider of Marval, AK.

Visitation Saturday, February 25, 2006 in the gym at Lee Kornegay Middle School, followed by funeral services at noon. Interment to follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens in Mesa.
