John Arnold (Jack) Graham

John Arnold "Jack" Graham, 78, died of Huntington's Disease on Sept. 30, 2006, in San Diego. He was born on Aug. 29, 1928, in Sheridan, Wyo.

The family soon moved to Yakima, where Jack graduated in 1946, after a standout high school sports career. He attended Central Washington University on a basketball scholarship, graduating in 1951. In 1950, he married college classmate Dorothy Rutledge, and together they had four children. They were later divorced.

In 1951, Jack began his teaching and coaching career in Elma. In 1953, the basketball team took 3rd Place in the State Tournament, losing only one game to the state champs. He was Elma's Man of the Year in 1953. In 1956, he began teaching and coaching at Sumner High School and, again, his team went to State. In 1958, Jack and his family moved to Olympia to teach and coach at Olympia High School. The basketball teams went to State five times! He also was President of the Washington State Coaches Association from 1963 to 1964.

Jack completed his Master's degree at Washington State University and then as Olympia School District's Director of counseling initiated their counseling program. Next, Jack received his Ph.D. in Counseling and Psychology at Arizona State University in 1967, and moved to San Diego, where he was a full professor at San Diego State University and had a private practice.

In 1978, Jack met the second love of his life, Lynda Kindig. They were married in 1989, and it was Lynda who filled Jack's life with love, comfort, and support. They were soulmates. She survives him at the family home.

He is survived by his four children, John (Dee Dee) of Penryn, Calif., Robert, of Olympia, Thomas (Helen) of Lake Stevens, and Denise Berglund (Dave) of Shelton. He loved his 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson; His brother, James, lives in Myrtle Creek, Ore.
