Jesus (Sal) Castro

Jesus “Sal” Castro, 69, passed away at his home in Kearny on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009.

Sal was born Sept. 5, 1939 in Sonora to Salvador and Anita Diaz-Gonzalez Castro.

A lifetime resident of the area, he graduated from the old Ray High School in Sonora. He attended Western New Mexico University were he received his Bachelor of Arts degree and then continued his education at the University of New Mexico where he received his Master’s Degree. Throughout the years, he attended the University of Arizona for further graduate classes.

He was employed by the Ray School District for 32 years, starting as a Spanish teacher and coach. He served as the Ray High School principal for 26 years before retirement.

Mr. Castro was an active member of the Catholic Church and worked at various jobs for the local Parish after his retirement from the school district.

He loved sports and he enjoyed watching the Diamondbacks play.

A loving husband, father and grandfather, he will be greatly missed by all.

Sal is survived by his wife, Mary of Kearny; daughters, Amy Castro Ahlstromer and her husband Magnus Ahlstromer IV of Maricopa, and Annette Castro of Mesa; his mother, Anita Castro of Kearny; brothers, Bobby (Virginia) Castro of Phoenix and Billy (Debbie) Castro of Apache Junction; grandson, Magnus Ahlstromer V; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Salvador M. Castro.

The visitation was held Saturday morning, Feb. 7, at Infant Jesus of Prague Catholic Church in Kearny, followed by Father Dale Branson celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment was at Kearny Medical Cemetery.

Griffith Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
