The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Wednesday, May 2, 2007 Helmi Norton died on April 28, 2007, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Prescott Valley. She was born on May 6, 1915, in Kangasniemelia, Finland. She arrived in America on January 11, 1931, to work on the family farm in Westminster Massachusetts. Her life long work ethic evolved on the New England farm. Helmi's four sisters, Tynne, Saimi, Elma and Helen died before her. Helmi married Voitto Henry Brandt and they had one son, Henry William Brandt. They lived in Massachusetts for many years. They enjoyed travel and dancing. Enjoying a Finnish sauna with friends was a weekly social treat. During World War II, Helmi worked to help the war effort. Helmi visited Finland and Sweden in the 60s and volunteered at a Swedish facility for children with disabilities. Helmi married James Norton in 1972 and they resided in Las Vegas, Nevada until Jim's death in 1996. In 1997, Helmi moved into a retirement facility in Tracy, California and developed a reputation for "hard" work and caring and service to others. She was recognized for her "caring" volunteer efforts. She never spoke unkindly of others and always offered her help to others. In 2003, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Prescott Valley. Her activities included special trips, bingo, singing, worship, baking and bowling. She made delicious Finnish coffee rolls with lingenberry filler. Helmi is survived by her son, Henry Brandt of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; granddaughters, Donna Bridges of Hunker, Pennsylvania, Lisa Brandt of Prescott Valley, Arizona and Dianna Watson of Prescott Valley; and her grandson William Brandt of Moab, Utah. She has seven great granddaughters, Danielle, Faith, Kelly Jean, Ashley, Helmi, Aili and Katie. She loved and enjoyed her family. A celebration of her life will be at the Good Samaritan Facility in Prescott Valley at a future date. Information provided by survivors. |
