Longtime Prescott resident and Yavapai County native son John Thomas Taylor died Feb. 25, 2009, at his home with his wife and under hospice care. He was born in Camp Verde, Ariz., Sept. 29, 1916, to pioneer doctor John Thomas Taylor and Mabel Harness Taylor. He married his wife of 70 years, Helen Corene Nieman, June 18, 1938.

After starting his career by owning a grocery store in Clemenseau, they moved to Flagstaff and continued in the grocery business until 1949, when family health issues dictated a move to Prescott. He was an insurance agent with BMA for many years until he went into real estate with Pauley and McDonald Realtors as a realtor and broker until his retirement at 74 years of age.

John will be remembered for his love of the Lord, his active service in his local church, First Baptist Church of Prescott, serving as a youth sponsor, longtime Sunday School teacher and active deacon. He also served several years as the Chairman of the Arizona Conservative Baptist board. One of his other passions was God's Word and the Gideons. He was an active Gideon for 60 years. Besides church and family, he enjoyed the out-of-doors and instilled in his family a love of hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Helen; son and daughter-in-law Charlie and Diana of Skull Valley, Ariz.; son and daughter-in-law Tom and Janet of Camp Verde, Ariz.; and daughter and son-in-law Trudy and Bernie Kannenberg of Chino Valley, Ariz. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive him.

Interment was private. Memorial services will be at the First Baptist Church of Prescott, 123 S. Marina St. on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at 11 a.m. The family requests memorials to Gideon's International or a charity of the donor's choosing.

The arrangements were entrusted to Hampton Funeral Home. Please visit www.hamptonfuneralhome.com to sign John's guestbook.
