George Kemp Cheves Jr.

Kemp passed away peacefully with his wife and children at his side in California on Oct. 14, 2013. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 16, 1936, to George Kemp and Maxine Mildred (Anderson) Cheves.

His family moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 1954. When he was faced with a requirement to repeat classes he had already taken in Texas, Kemp opted to join the Navy and completed his education there. He served aboard the USS Piedmont during the Korean conflict. He married his high school sweetheart, Sondra Brauner, in 1957. They had two children, Rebecca Lynne and Garret Kemp.

Kemp attended Arizona State College then transferred to National University when he moved to San Diego to work at General Dynamics after he and Sondra divorced. He received his Bachelor of Technology in 1972 and became a certified manufacturing engineer in 1975.

He was a consultant for 25 years specializing in the WOFAC Work Factor approach to industrial engineering. He consulted for Arthur Young and Science Management before establishing Cheves Productivity Services.

Kemp met Judy Vorland in 1985 while a consultant at Northrop Aircraft in California. They were married in 1988. They enjoyed attending street rod runs and drives up the coast of California in their '37 Ford. They loved camping in the Sierras, friendship with many musicians and family gatherings.

After his retirement, he and Judy moved to Prescott Valley, Ariz. He was an active member of Prescott Frontier Days and was honored to be a Director and involved in the historic World's Oldest Rodeo.

Kemp and Judy also learned to love Cowboy Poets and songwriters and joined their good friends Jack and Penny Vance to enjoy Poets Gatherings across the West.

Kemp was preceded in death by his father George Kemp Cheves Sr.; mother Maxine Mildred (Anderson) Miller; stepson Scott Cheves; and nephew Sean Cheves.

Kemp is survived by his wife Judy of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; daughter Lynne (Mark) Ruybalid of Loma Linda, Calif.; son Garret (Patrice) Cheves of Los Angeles, Calif.; stepsons Erik (Mark Gelfuso) Vorland of Burbank, Calif., Aaron Scott Vorland of Craig, Colo. and Seth (Bridget) Vorland of Torrance, Calif.; brothers Richard (MaryAlice) Cheves and William (MaryLou) Cheves of Mesa, Ariz.; sister Darla Cheves of Apache Junction, Ariz.; grandchildren Timothy (Marion) Ruybalid, Julia Ruybalid, Shea Cheves, Krista (Ryan)Nestman, Andrew (Brandee) Brown, Jordan, Elizabeth and Aydin Vorland; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to our friends Lloyd and Darla Voorhees for their help during our visit with them in Fallbrook, Calif. when Kemp needed medical care. Thanks to the medical staff at Fallbrook ER, the Mercy flight crew and those in the Trauma Center and ICU and the loving and supportive comfort care staff at Palomar Health. Along with Kemp's doctor, Dr. Askari, your consideration and thoughtfulness shown to Kemp and our family have helped us through this difficult time.

A Celebration of Kemp's Life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at the Freeman Building, Rodeo Drive on the Prescott Frontier Days rodeo grounds.
