Helen Adeline (Ellis) Van Vickle

Posted 2013-10-31 by Pat Wilson
Helen Adeline Van Vickle died peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by loved-ones in her home, on Sunday evening, June 18, 2006 in Sun City West, AZ.

She will be loved and missed by all who knew her. Adeline lived a productive life of over 79 years. She was "ahead of her time," an extremely intelligent, strong-willed, spunky, woman. Adeline was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Her shining role in life was being a wonderful grandmother. She went to great lengths to be at all the important events in the lives of her grandchildren and other family members.

On December 05, 1926 Adeline was born to E. Jay and Gertrude Ellis in Holyoke, Colorado.

She was raised on a farm in Colorado. Her parents moved the family to Sioux City, Iowa. Adeline loved to dance. She tap-danced during scene changes at school plays when she was in grades 5th through 7th, and at amateur variety shows. Adeline was a sharp dresser, and loved wearing stylish, high-heel shoes. She had a keen sense of style, and accessorized her outfits from head to toe.

While dancing at the Tomba Ballroom in Sioux City, Iowa in 1947, she met and fell in love with Van. They were married in 1948, and spent over 57 years together.

Adeline's amazing organization skills awarded her the balance to have a full-time career managing multiple companies' financial records, maintaining the household duties of cooking, cleaning, raising two daughters, and being a loving and supportive wife. Adeline loved to square-dance, swim, play cards & billiards, bowl, make dresses for her granddaughters in the summertime and knit beautiful sweaters for her family members (especially the granddaughters). She was an excellent cook. Her specialties were fried chicken and chocolate pie. Adeline traveled with her family to Colombia (South America), Canada, Europe, Hawaii, and throughout the United States. She loved to solve crossword puzzles, cryptograms, and sudoku puzzles every day, which kept her mind sharp-as-a-tack.

Van and Adeline moved to Sun City West in 1994. They made many wonderful friends there, and thoroughly enjoyed all the activities that the Sun City West Community has to offer. Adeline was an active volunteer worker. We affectionately called her "The Countess", because she liked to count money. For several years, she was the treasurer for the Sun City West Arthritis Club, her condominium association, and church, as well as being the men's golf monitor at the Stardust Golf Course.

Adeline struggled for many years with cancer, arthritis, and other health challenges. She kept a strong-willed attitude up to the very end. The medical staff of Sun Health Hospice was amazing in helping Adeline and her family through her final two months.

Van preceded Adeline in death by exactly four months to the day. Adeline is survived by her sister Hazel Putnam, her brother George Ellis, her daughters & sons-in-law Kathy & Gabriel Velasquez and Linda & Scott Pangrle, and her granddaughters and their families Ana, Sasha & Madeline Kukulj and Julie, Jack & Tate Myers, and Sheryl, Jeff, Nicolas & Jett Krueger.

Adeline requested that all memorial contributions be directed to the non-profit, special needs school: Springall Academy c/o Adeline Van Vickle Memorial Fund, 6460 Boulder Lake Ave., San Diego, CA 92119.

Adeline's memorial service was held at the Desert Garden United Church, 18818 N. 128th Ave., Sun City West, AZ 85375 on Saturday, June 24, 2006.
