Born in Lakin, Kansas on March 13, 1930
Departed on Nov. 3, 2002 and resided in Oak Creek Valley, Ariz.

Max Hillyard, of Oak Creek Valley, Arizona, passed away at his home, Sunday, November 3, after a courageous battle with cancer. Max was born in Lakin, Kansas, on March 13, 1930. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Max was the Art Director for KGUN-TV in Tucson, Ariz. and the Arizona Daily Star/Citizen. He was an illustrator for a U.S. defense contractor, providing technical artist renderings for missile systems and satellite surveillance equipment.

After moving his family, in 1977, to the Fort Apache Indian Reservation where his wife was the Principal of the elementary school, he became a full-time freelance artist and illustrator, designing the Great Seal of the White Mountain Apache Tribe and providing the paintings that still hang in the Whiteriver Hospital.

In 1998, Max and his wife retired to Oak Creek Valley where he continued to paint and enjoy his beautiful grandchildren. Throughout his life, Max received numerous awards for his paintings and sculptures.

He is survived by his loving wife, Myrna; one sister, Kay, of Green Valley, Calif.; two sons, Jim (Anne) and Mark; and two granddaughters, Annika and Emily.

Services will be held Thursday, November 7, in Peace Lutheran Church, Cottonwood at 10 a.m.

Burial will follow in the Valley View Cemetery.
