George J. Gerhardt, 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2009, at 12:30 a.m. in Yavapai Regional Medical Center in Prescott, Ariz., with daughter Kathy and granddaughter Keristyn at his side. George John Gerhardt was born May 4, 1921, at home in Devils Lake, N.D., the ninth of 10 children born to Valentin Gerhardt and Eva Rose (Volk) Gerhardt, immigrants from Russia who met, married and homesteaded in North Dakota.

George served in the Air Force during World War II. After the service he went home and began working for Milwaukee Brewery before he began his career in the U.S. Post Office, which he stayed with until his retirement. He enjoyed golfing for many years until he couldn't any more; then his

favorite things were reading, crossword puzzles and traveling to visit family and friends. His last crossword puzzle was entitled "PARTING WORDS" and the first word was "FAREWELL."

George greatly loved animals and children, and faithfully supported his local TV KAET 8 that provides the community with quality television programs.

George was the last surviving member of his birth family. He was predeceased by his parents, and siblings Lambert 1903, Frank Joseph Gerhard, Catherine 1906, Catherine Margaret Brower, Michael John Gerhardt, Valentine Edward Gerhard; Lambert Ronald Gerhard, Madeline "Lena" Lisowski, and Joseph Gerhardt 1924.

George will be dearly missed by daughters Kathy L. (Michael) VanNote of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Regina D. Garcia of Johnson Valley, Calif.; sons Michael J. Gerhardt (Laurie) of Lucerne Valley, Calif., and John R. Gerhardt of Victorville, Calif.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, family suggests memorials be made to your local TV station, Habitat for Humanity International or your local humane society. http://www.tributes.com/georgejgerhardt
