Daniel Thad Earl, 49, of Prescott, Ariz., born June 22, 1959, in Defiance, Ohio, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on March 16, 2009.

Dan was the fourth of five children born to Dr. and Mrs. Thad J. Earl. Raised on a farm in Ohio, the family then moved to Sierra Vista, Ariz., in 1973.

Dan graduated from Buena High School in 1977 and received his bachelor's degree from Occidental College in 1982. He was conferred with a Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986, and completed his family practice residency at Chicago Osteopathic Hospital in 1988.

Dan became enamored with the care of teens and completed a fellowship in adolescent medicine in Chicago and Kansas City. During his training, he met a quiet medical student named Jean Sutherland, and his heart was smitten. Dan and Jean were married on Oct. 25, 1987, and soon there were three little Earls: Katie, Elizabeth and Tim.

Jean completed her family medicine residency in 2000, and the family moved to Johnson City, Tenn., where Dan became clinical associate professor of family medicine at East Tennessee State University School of Medicine. He remained there until 2002. While there, he traveled extensively, teaching and lecturing, and also authored numerous articles and book chapters on many medical topics. The family then moved to Prescott, Ariz., and Dan joined Scott Ekdahl in practice at Chino Valley Medical Center.

Dan had an electric energy, a passion for Christ, a brilliant mind, an unmatched dedication to helping those less fortunate, and a bottomless heart. Dan taught all those around him the value of life, the importance of laughter, the gift of God's grace, and the priceless nature of love. Dan was "unconventional." His sense of humor and passion for life were contagious.

He loved his bicycle and followed professional bicycle racing ever since his first amateur race at age 15. He traveled to England in 2007 to watch his beloved Tour de France. Dan loved music and was known to "tickle the ivories." Dan gave his life to his Lord in 1987, and poured out his love to his patients and family.

He will be greatly missed by his wife Jean, daughters Katie and Elizabeth, and son Tim. He leaves behind three sisters, Sue (Yuma, Ariz.), Kathy (Gainesville, Fla.), Dory (Bellingham, Wash.), and one brother, Jeff (Louisburg, Kan.).

A celebration of Dan's life will be this Saturday, March 21, at 11 a.m. at Calvary Chapel in Prescott. A private family burial will follow the celebration. Please direct memorials to Compassion International, 12290 Voyager Parkway, Colorado Springs, Colo., 80921.

Hampton Funeral Home has been entrusted with making the arrangements. Please visit www.hamptonfuneralhome.com to sign Dan's guestbook.
