Jane Dudan, born Jan. 24, 1921, in Glen Ridge, N.J., passed away March 3, 2009, at the age of 88 surrounded by her family at home.

After raising her family in West Nyack, N.Y., Jane and her husband Peter retired and lived in Scottsdale, Ariz., for 20 years. They enjoyed their summers in the mountains of Prescott, Ariz., later moving to the San Francisco Bay Area to be near family.

Jane passionately dedicated her life to public service in New York State's Rockland and Westchester counties. Her concern for youth and community prompted years of dedication to the Parent Teachers' Association (PTA) there.

As an advocate of women's rights, Planned Parenthood was closest to her heart in her life's work of helping others in need. She dedicated many years of effort in helping to bring to fruition the dream of a local Planned Parenthood clinic. In 1980 the Planned Parenthood Federation of America recognized her for significant contributions to the advancement of voluntary family planning and to the concept that each child born should be wanted and loved.

Among the other many organizations that honored Jane throughout her life, the Assembly of State of New York cited her exemplary service to the community through her unique personal achievement and a lifetime of good citizenry.

Her strength and persistence inspired others to realize their own potentials, overcoming hardships that may have not otherwise been challenged. Her hard work, resourcefulness and organizational skills put her naturally in a leadership position.

As a builder, architect and creative force she transformed her old farmhouse into a charming and hospitable home filled with life and laughter. She was a pianist, songwriter, author, poet, world traveler and loved to dance.

Jane will be dearly missed by her sister, four children, five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and her best friend and beloved husband, Peter.

Jane did the best she could each day, in her own way, and left this world a better place to live.

No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances be made to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Habitat for Humanity International or Doctors Without Borders.
