Marilyn Patterson

December 7, 1939 - March 16, 2014

Marilyn Patterson passed away on March 16, 2014 at home surrounded by loving family. She was born Dec. 7, 1939 in Mesa, Ariz. to Nelda Hutchinson and Donald Yager. At the age of eight, she was adopted by her stepfather, Lawrence Carr. She spent her childhood in Mesa and Tempe.

While spending time at summer girls’ camp near Pine, Ariz. in 1953, Marilyn met the love of her life, Harold B. Patterson. They married on Aug. 1, 1956 and an amazing love story began. Marilyn completed her schooling and graduated from Tempe High School in 1957. She worked as a secretary at many Valley high schools and later on at HB’s Place in Pine, Ariz.

Marilyn had five children. The oldest, Harold Douglas, was born July 1, 1958 and Laurie Ellen was born Dec. 9, 1959. In March 1960, Marilyn and family moved to Pine. The family was sealed in the Arizona Temple for Time and All Eternity on Jan. 18, 1962 and Sheri Leann was born Aug. 4, 1962. Melinda Sue was born Nov. 18, 1965. Marilyn and family moved to the Valley in 1966 and lived in Tempe. The last child, Cynthia Paige, was born Dec. 30, 1971.

In 1973, Marilyn and family moved to a newly built home in Gilbert, Ariz. They owned the home until 2007.

Marilyn was a thoughtful person that brought kindness out of everyone she met. She loved to sew, to make floral arrangements, and work on crafts. She also enjoyed taking family vacations and spending time with family. Marilyn was the foundation of her family and is dearly missed.

She is survived by her children and sisters, Juanita Shootman in Des Moines, Iowa and Patricia Mahoney in Scottsdale, Ariz.
