James Anthony (Jimmy) Hanley, Jr.

Posted 2009-03-26 by Edward Peed
James Anthony Hanley Jr., “Jimmy,” entered into his eternal peace on March 9, 2009.

Jimmy, 50, was taken from his family and friends when he went to answer the door to his Phoenix apartment and was killed when two bullets were fired through it, lodging in his heart and chest. His coworkers and friends found him when he failed to show up for work the next day.

James was born in Phoenix on Feb. 24, 1958, to his late parents, James G. Hanley and Antonia Munoz, both originally from Winkelman.

He was a 1977 graduate of Hayden High School and after graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, following in his father’s footsteps. He started off as a “Sea Bee,” but finished his naval career in a Special Forces Unit as a Navy Seal.

James loved water. Anytime he could be in the water he was. He preferred the Salt River or Gila River. He loved fishing and camping – just being outdoors. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs, Sheba his half-wolf and Boots, the dog that had been his mother’s at the time of her passing.

James was known to his friends and family as Jim, Jimmy, Jimbo, Jim Bob, Twinkie, Jimito, Jimole and Tony. He had a big heart, wonderful laugh and winning smile.

He leaves behind sisters, Frances Hanley and husband Cuco Falquez of Winkelman, Melissa McKeown and husband Bill Ickles of Mesa, Michelle McKeown of Mesa and Dacia Hanley; brothers, Gene McKeown and Mark McKeown, both of California, and Patrick Hanley and Genaro Hanley, both of Phoenix; and eight nephews, eight nieces, five great-nieces and one great-nephew. Relatives in the area are many: Munoz, Serna, Benitez, Martinez, Noriega and Manley. He also leaves behind countless true and wonderful friends and coworkers.

Memorial services were held Monday, March 16, with arrangements handled by Griffith Mortuary. James will be cremated and his ashes will be interred with his parents at the Mountain View Cemetery in Hayden and scattered at Saguaro Lake where he loved to camp, fish and swim with his dogs, family and friends.

Jimmy will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
